Today I’m writing about a topic, that most musicians will have their own opinion about. Which is better? Software, that imitates real-life musical instruments, or “real” hardware-instruments?
Well, let’s start with the software: It surely is easier to buy a DAW (digital audio workstation) and start composing music with a lot of virtual instruments included. Basic “essential” versions of well known DAW’s don’t cost that much, especially in comparison with physical instruments. And additionally, you have an whole orchestra in one program. Making music is more achieveable to people with less money.
Well, there surely is another way to look at things: Making music with real instruments gives you more of a real musical experience. You can play live and you don’t need a laptop to make music. While sitting at a fireplace, it is cool to have a guitar and play some chilly tunes. Very old-school, even if it sounds like a clichee. But is this way of making music really superior to composing music with DAW’s? Well, like I said in the beginning: Most musicians will have their own opinion about that.
So, what is the ultimate truth? Well, you might have guessed: It depends on your personal preferences. Personally I don’t care whether music is made on actual instruments or composed with a computer. As long as I like the song, it doesn’t matter to me.
So, tell me: What do you prefer? DAW’s or “handmade” music?
